Training Semimar Gives Manatee Leaders Refresher in Emergency Response

MANATEE COUNTY, FL (Aug. 13, 2009) – A group of Manatee County’s top officials, law enforcement, fire and rescue personnel today took part in an annual training exercise designed to refresh government leaders on continuity of operations during an emergency.

During the four-hour Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) seminar, a hypothetical emergency scenario was posed to several groups, including the Board of County Commissioners, Manatee County Public Safety Department, the County Administrator’s Office, Manatee Sheriff’s Office and other key response teams.

Each group worked through the scenario using a set of plans it has developed to address emergencies. COOP plans are designed to ensure governmental operations are up and running within 12 hours of an emergency. The plans map out emergency lines of succession, provide relocation options and serve as a guide for orderly response and recovery to re-establish normal operations.

“Today’s exercise served as a valuable part in Manatee County Government’s ongoing efforts to improve our response procedures in the event of an emergency,” said Deputy County Administrator Karen Windon. “I believe we have established a thorough response plan and a great team that could adapt to any emergency scenario. The public can have great confidence that local government is well-prepared for unforeseen events.”
